Peacock Bass Fishing Report Miami 7/23/2008

Alex Campuzano from MD. with a pair of nice peacock bass in the Miami area!

Alex “Big Al” Campuzano and I ventured into the “urban Amazon” in search of those peacock bass that we have here in South Florida. What a fishery it is to say the least. I do not know of another system around that can consistently produce 20 to 30 fish days for people on every day of the week all year long. Sure some days are better than others and at times it gets a bit slow but you can count on one thing and that is you will catch fish.

We were the only boat in the blue lagoons today so we stayed and caught about 15 or so and could have kept catching them there but I wanted to hit the canals for a while. It was a good move as we had a bit more shade and we boated two really nice fish as you can see above along with some other small ones. We ate a great seafood lunch on the water at Sonias during a thunder storm and then it was back to the canals for a few more peacocks. I think we had about 30 on the day.  What a blast!

Leland and Carter Creel with 2 nice peacock bass in the Miami area!

What a fun day I had with this father and son team from the lonestar state. It was a beautiful sunny dau in South Florida and the fish bit great for us. We started out right off the bat with a nice peacock bass before we even got in the boat. That set the tone for the rest of the day.

We fished around the airport lakes for a while catching a bunch of peacocks sight fishing and then it was to the canals and some other spots for a few more. We called it a day around 12:30 with between 25 and 30 landed for the day.

On another boat…John Pate had Mike and Paul who are down from Canada out today on the same water as us and reported landing about 25 peacocks as well and one big fish about 5 pounds. They also boated a 5 pound Florida snook.

Kelly Burgardt and his soon to be in-law Walker with 4 nice peacock bass!

Boy was it hot today but man did we have a great time as well as catch some nice fish.  I also have 2 new friends in Kansas. I have been fishing the airport lakes a lot lately but have been moving around a lot so I do not put too much pressure on the fish in a certain area. It has been difficult with a lot of other boats around but I am still managing 20 or so peacocks a day up to 5 pounds.

Kelly started the day out with a nice peacock on a torpedo and Walker followed minutes later with a 2 pounder of his own on a shiner. Kelly had some vicious strikes on that chrome and blue baby torpedo but only the one fish did we peg. After 20 fish or so in 6 hours and one big one about 5 pounds we packed up and headed for the comforts of home.

Ray Villwok with a pair of beautiful Miami peacock bass!

Ray came down from Palm Beach and met me at B.J.’s bait and tackle in Plantation where we loaded up on shiners and ice for the day. We headed south from there to Antonio Maceo park on the blue lagoons where we launched the boat.

Ray boated 20 fish today that included 13 or 14 peacock bass, a snook and some big mayan cichlids. After a productive morning and with the heat of the day building we decided to call it a day at 12:30 and headed for the house. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Mike Fleming and his buddy Tommy in the Miami lakes and canals!

We had a fun day with local boys Mike & Tommy. The two guys are fishing buddies and wanted to celebrate early for Mikes upcoming birthday. Being from the Miami area the guys are used to catching peacock bass ans good ones at that. So, today was more about them learning some new fishing areas rather us focusing on catchng a bunch of fish.

I moved around a lot today and we hit a few fish here and a few there. It was a good day with the guys landing 20 peacocks or so in 8 hours. All in all we saw a lot of water today and I think the guys will enjoy fishing some of the areas that they saw today.

I had the pleasure of guiding John Baker in from the Dallas area for some butterfly peacock bass down here in Miami. We had a great day as you will see in the video and had a lot of fun fishing together. I even caught a few today.

We started out in the lakes and landed a small peacock right off the bat and then a snook that was about a pound minutes later. A few more sight fish and then it was to the canals for the rest of the day. I think all in all we had about 25 fish today up to 6 pounds. We got 3 fish that were over 5 pounds and a bunch of other quality fish from 1 to 3 pounds. That is a pretty darn good day if you ask me.

Elliott Sugar and his boys with a few beautiful peacocks in MIami!

Boy it sure is good to be back in South Florida! Michigan was nice but I am glad I do not live there, especially in the winters. I would love a summer home there one day and can definitely see why lots of people spend the summers up north and the winters down here. It is just beautiful at night.

Today I was out with repeat client Elliott Sugar from the Toronto area. This time he brought some friends down to share in the excitement of catching the peacock bass here in South Florida! We worked some areas at the airport that have been holding some nice fish. The action was pretty consistent all day long for the guys. I think we landed about 35 or 40 fish up to about 4 pounds on small live shiners. We had 2 big fish on but they broke the line on hard runs right at the boat. We had them pegged and probably would have landed them if someone hadn’t tightened my drag ALL THE WAY DOWN!

LOL…What a blast I had sharing the boat with you all and look forward to the next trip as well as your company. Maybe next time we do the everglades?

Lake St. Claire Bass Fishing Video 7/14/2008

Click PLAY above to watch a video I shot recently on Lake St. Claire!

For the last week I have been up in Michigan visiting some family. We had a great trip which included some fellowship with our loved ones some golf and of course some bass fishing! What an awesome fishery the folks up there have. From the Detroit river down to St. Claire and Erie there is a lifetime of water to fish. The smallmouth bass is an awesome fighter and they jump out of the water like a small tarpon.

If you ever have a chance to fish these waters do take it. The turquoise water water reminds me of the Florida keys in spots and is absolutely beautiful. We caught about 20 or so throghout the day with one about 3 and a half pounds and a decent largemouth. I hope that you enjoy the video that I was able to get.

If you are in the Detroit area and would like to fish for smallmouth bass with a great guide with an  awesome boat then give Capt. Doug cummings a call. You can visit his website by clicking here.

Click PLAY above to hear “fisherman” by B.A.S.S. Elite Series Pro Casey Ashley!

What a great song right! I also thank the Lord every day for the chance to continue to live my dream and fish for a living just like the song says. We are truly blessed as professional anglers. Today was about as slow a day as I have had on guide trip this year but that happens in fishing sometimes. Scott Goett and Dave his father came down from Boynton Beach to fish the glades with me for the day and we had a great time. I tried to talk the guys into going peacock bass fishing in Miami but they were die-hards as well as great sports and wanted to tough it out in the everglades bass fishing.

We stayed in the canals in the morning and struggled only landing one bass about 2 pounds and a few big garfish also ate for us. I made a little move to another stretch of canal and a huge bass ate a shiner for Dave. He fought it to within about 20 feet of the boat only to watch her jump and throw the hook right back at us. That was tough to watch! We expolored the flats for a while with a few follow ups and one good bite which we missed. Scott landed a mayan cichlid a few minutes later on a jig and then it was back to the canals for one more bass about 2 1/2 pounds.

South Florida Bass Fishing Report 7/5/2008

Steve Gordon and his Dad had a fun day of bass fishing in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida!

What a great 1/2 day trip I had today with the Gordon’s from the Wellington area. We started out planning on fishing the everglades in the afternoon and right when I was getting bait the sky unleashed one nasty line of thunderstorms. So, we opted to head to the C-14 canal off of Southgate blvd. as the skies there did not look as menacing.

It turned out to be a good decision as we only got a light rain for 5 or 10 minutes and that was it for the rest of the day. It is old news that the rains have slowed the bite down here a bit but if you know which baits to throw and where to be at you can still catch fish. Steve started out hooking a nice 4 pounder on a Zoom super fluke in watermelon and  missed a couple more great bites on a horny toad minutes later. It was slow for a while after that and then blam! another topwater bite on the frog…this time is was a bullseye snakehead which is not welcomed aboard like the largemouth bass. We found a few peacocks on the beds also in the gin clear water of the arterial canals that wind back in the neighborhoods and we also got a nice bass at the end of the day which you see above.

South Florida Bass Report C-14 Canal 7/2/2008

Steve Ryan with a nice peacock bass in the C-14 Canal off of Atlantic Blvd!

It was day 2 for my new friends from Chi-town and boy it was a beautiful morning. Steve is a free-lance writer for a host of different fishing magazines and is working on an article for this summers in-fisherman magazine featuring the exotic species found here in South Florida. Today our targeted species were the big blue talapia and the bullseye snakehead.

We fished the C-14 canal out of the ramp at Southgate and Rock Island. We had to end our day a bit early with the building thunder-storms but we did manage 2 snakeheads 4 or 5 largemouth bass and the peacock bass that you see above. There are lots of talapia beds in the canal but the fish have already spawned and apparently have vacated the beds so no big blue talapia…”Thats is o.k… we had a lot of fun”  said Steve as we loaded up the boat. They had been out earlier in the year with Butch Moser, a guide on the Ida/Osborne chain in Palm Beach and caught some great big Klown Knifefish and one of Steves buddies from Tampa, an avid snakehead angler found a few big snakeheads recently with Steve in a canal in Coral Springs so he has plenty of good pictures for his work. It was a lot of fun fishing with you guys and I can’t wait to see how the article comes out!

Josephine Ryan with a trophy peacock bass caught in the Miami canals!

What a fun day I had today with a great couple in the Ryans. Steve and his wife Josephine came down from Chigao to fish with us for a couple of days in search of some of South Florida’s exotic species of fish. Steve is a freelance writer for numerous fishing magazines and is doing an article for Doug Stange, editor of the in-fisherman magazine. The article will feature the different exotic species available to anglers here in South Florida.

We fished today in Miami for the peacock bass, mayan & midas cichlids and jaguar guapote. We boated every species that we were after with the exception of the big orange midas cichlid. These fish are found more easily in the falls canal system than they are in the airport lakes system where we fished today. We had a blast landing close to 20 peacock bass up to about 5 pounds. We also had a 10 or 12 pound tarpon on for a while until he broke the line on a big jump. What a blast!

Jeff Karr caught this small tarpon while fishing for peacock bass in Miami!

What a great 2 days I had with the 3 Karr boys Jeff, and his two sons Jake and Sam who were visiting from VA. Day one took us to the Miami lakes and canals that border the airport in search of the fisty butterfly peacock bass. It did not take very long to get things going as Jeff landed this small tarpon about 5 minutes after I shut down. What a treat to land this “silver king” as most of the time they break the line that we use. The guys had a great day landing around 15 peacock bass up to about 4 pounds.

Day 2 was to the Florida everglades for some largemouth. I toughed it out at Holiday Park again today even with all of the new water coming in from sawgrass and the griffin canal. We landed a nice peacock bass and a big mudfish in the first 20 or 30 minutes off of the alley and then it was nothing for a couple of hours. I made a move North a ways and finally we get bit. Sam fights one of the biggest bass that I have seen of this year right to my boat and with one  jump and a shake of her head his line goes limp. What a tough thing to watch…All in all we had a great day and the guys told me that they had a lot of fun and to quote Jeff “that was the biggest bass I have ever seen in my life” and “that will be the fish that gets my father in-law down here” Well Jeff I look forward to having you guys back and next time hopefully the fish will not be so lucky!

Mike from Minnesota and a pair of beautiful butterfly peacock bass in Miami!

I fished with Mike today who came all the way down from Minnesota to try his luck at a peacock bass or 30. With all of the rain recently the water management has had all the floodgates open which really dirties up our canals. Mike and I ran way back into the neighborhoods and found some cleaner water. When we did this we also found the fish.

Mike boated one on the first cast and we did not stop until it was time to go. We had a lot of quality fish in the 3 to 4 pound range and a nice one about 5 pounds. The other 20 or so were in-between 1 and 3 pounds and were a lot of fun to watch Mike catch. You gotta love it when they eat like they did today!

Tight Lines,

Stratos Bass Boat For SALE!! Asking 10k. Call Steve McDonald (754) 264-9001

Today I fished with repeat client Kevin Phelps from the great state if PA. Kevin is a good fisherman and had a blast today fishing out of Holiday Park. The rains have been starting to take its toll on the fishing and some of the fish have moved outof the canals and back into the flats. We still managed about 80 fish today…all were small but we enjoyed a plether of different species from black bass to peacock bass, mayan cichlids, oscars, mudfish and even a chain pickerel.

On our second day we were after a big fish…Kevin did not want pics of anything under 5 or 6 pounds. So, we threw big baits at them all day trying for that big bite. Well we fished hard for 8 hours and only managed a dozen or so fish…a far cry from yesterday. The all nightrains and the pending full moon has frinally taken its toll. We made one last move and on the first cast Kevin hooks up. The fish swam right for the boat and fast only to goive him and I a good look at her. The fish was easily 7 pounds and probably closer to 8 or 9. The one hook on the Rapala we were throwing came unbuttoned and we just looked at each other and smiled. “That was the bite I came for” stated Kevin as we headed back to the ramp. “I will be back for her” was Kevin’s final thoughts before we had to go and load the boat on the trailer.
